Comments : 18:00 adult Black Brant-type Goose at Merrion Gates. Has been reported here, at Irishtown NR and at Kilcoole a couple of times this winter. Looks very like a Black Brant with the belly and back appearing dark but distinctly brown with an obvious contrast between them and the black neck/chest area. The brown colouration on the underparts is darkest on the belly, becoming progressively paler up along the side. The interface between the white patch on the side of the flanks and the dark brown belly is rather messy and not well defined, as such the pattern here isn’t as striking as shown by most Black Brants. The neck collar is prominent, more so than the accompanying ‘hrota’, thickest and brightest on the side of the neck and joining across the front of the throat (top and bottom lines of the collar) although broken here and not solid. Views of the bird were distant and face on most of the time so the extent of dark between the legs and onto the vent could not be assessed here (but the colouration is extensive and present behind the legs/on the vent per Noel Keogh's views of this bird from Kilcoole). Other observers who have seen this bird have also expressed reservations about it being a 'proper' Black Brant.
