I'm a keen ornithologist from Finland. My career as an amateur ornithologist has lasted more than 40 years, which confirms I know very well common breeding species in Southern Finland.
Last week I attended a conference at University College Dublin.
Unfortunately I had to spend most of daytime indoors. During my short walkabouts I observed 31 bird species mostly in campus area. Nothing special, however.
On 4th of June I first heard and soon after saw a Fieldfare (Turdus
pilaris) which took off from a tree and flew away never to be seen again. Through my 10x-binoculars I could easily see the tri-coloured upper parts: pale grey head, dark brown mantle and back, pale grey rump and black tail. Flight feathers (i.e. wings) were black. Distance was less than 50 meters.
