Driving the car between Banagher and Laurencetown at about 13.00hrs I noticed two raptors in the sky. At first I assumed they were buzzards, then herons but then I noticed the white tail. I stopped the car and watched the two birds for about 1.5 minutes. One had a white tail, it appeared completely white. The other was exactly the same size and shape but with no white tail; when the sunlight was on its back it appeared a bit ‘silvery mottled’. When I first saw them they were interacting with each other (as if ‘fighting’ but presumably not). This was my first time seeing this species but the shape, large size, broad square wings and white tail was unmistakeable. I had quite a good view but I could not notice any tags (but there might have been). They drifted northwards.
