Seen 19.00 hrs last night near Carrigaholt Co. Clare @ Q835526. Not seen again either at dusk or 06.30 hrs this morning. Initially saw back, very strong streaking with pronounced yellow/sandy streak. It turned to look in my direction for about 10 seconds. Zebra head, supercilium very deep above the eye giving it a surprised look unlike typical sedge which frowns. Median crown stripe not seen as the head swivelled not dipped. Whole body seemed pale yellow which made the zebra pattern on the head stand out. It had flown from one side of the track to the other about 20 to 30 feet in front of me. Deep overgrown hedge (brambles) fields but also patches of rushes and sedge nearby. Light conditions fair after day of gales and driving rain. Seen for about 20 seconds before it flew past me and dipped over the hedge not to reappear. No call heard. Legs and tail not seen - all too fast!
I am on holiday from UK. Not seen aquatic before but have 40 year plus birding including several thousand sedge. Rob Bailey.
